MD Motorwerke’s roots go back to a small kitchen table in South Jersey—where a young boy and his grandfather once tore down and resealed the motor of a beat-up Honda CT70. That boy was our founder, Matt Conover, and that kitchen table was just the beginning.

The journey truly began with vintage Volkswagens and later blossomed into a love for BMWs. At just 12 years old, Matt was helping restore classic BMW 2002s at his family’s small garage in Blackwood. By 14, he had his very first car—a 1971 BMW 2002—which he rebuilt by hand under the guidance of his stepfather, Ray.

After Ray’s tragic passing when he was just 16, he continued learning the trade hands-on while working at local shops like Verna’s Autobody (now known as VAC Motorsports). He earned his degree in Automotive Technology from Camden County College, then secured a position at DeSimone BMW—first part-time, then full-time after graduation—where he spent the next 12 years honing his craft.

It was there he met Dan Gaydos, a fellow BMW technician who shared the same dedication to the details. Together, they launched a modest side business in a 20x20 garage at his mom’s house—working out of the very space where Ray once wrenched. By 1998, that passion turned into a permanent shop when they purchased the current MD Motorwerke property in Somerdale.

Dan passed away in 2018, but his influence remains at the heart of the business.

Today, MD Motorwerke stands as a living tribute to the people and values that shaped it: curiosity, craftsmanship, and an uncompromising love for German engineering. Over 25 years later, we’re still a small, service-focused shop—offering personalized care with deep roots in the South Jersey community.
